Best Golf Training Aids: Our Top Picks For 2023

At the start of each year we test the most popular golf training aids on the market. And for the second year in a row, The Lag Shot is our pick for the best overall training aid.

But since each training aid has a different purpose, and the right choice for you will depend on what you’re looking to improve in your game, we’ve also included a top pick for 10 separate categories.

So whether you’re looking to boost your swing speed, work on your swing plane, or perfect your impact position, you’ll find the perfect training aid for you below.

Note: we get sent a ton of golf training aids to test (our garage is like a training aid grave yard), and we reject the vast majority of them. If a training aid is on this list it has been tested by us, and it works.

1. Lag Shot

the best overall golf training aid

The Lag Shot at a glance

What is it? A flexible shaft, with a real clubhead on the end. Think of it like an Orange Whip that you can actually hit balls with.

What will it do? It’s the most ‘all round’ training aid on our list, which is why it has been our number one choice for the past 2 years. To hit the ball well (even at all) with the Lag Shot you’re basically forced to make a solid, smooth swing. Get your transition wrong and you’ll smash the clubface into the ground. The Lag Shot will fix your swing without you even having to know the ‘how’.

Can you hit balls with it? Yes. In fact, to get the most out of it, you should.

Here’s three times PGA teacher of the year Adam Bazalgette demonstrating how to use the Lag Shot training club.

And here’s me hitting the Lag Shot 7 iron into my practice net.

Why the Lag Shot is the best overall training aid this year

This is the fourth time we’ve rounded up the top golf training aids on the market.

In 2020 and 2021, the Orange Whip came out on top. But last year, we felt it had finally been overtaken by another training aid, namely the Lag Shot.

Why?

Because it pretty much does everything the Orange Whip can, but has a big advantage: you can actually hit balls with it. I’ve had an Orange Whip for about 8 years. Here’s me swinging one around in my back garden…

…but these days it just gathers dust on the shelf in my garage.

The Lag Shot has the same flexible shaft as the Orange Whip —  which helps you groove your tempo and rhythm — but also has a clubhead (either a 7 iron, a wedge, or a driver) that you can use to hit real golf balls on the range.

It has a few uses (including a decent core workout), but without doubt its most useful one is for working on rhythm, tempo, and balance.

If you get out of sequence you’ll slam the clubhead into the ground. Above all else, the Lag Shot forces you to be patient in transition, which is always a good thing.

The Lag Shot is particularly handy if you’re getting a bit bogged down in technical swing thoughts. It will get you “feeling” the swing again and stopping obsessing over positions.

Basically it’s an all-rounder that will improve your entire swing. Just take it to the range, then alternate between hitting balls with the Lag Shot and your real clubs. Simple, yet super effective and our pick for the best golf training aid this year.

3. The GEM

the best training aid for slice this year

The GEM swing aid

The GEM at a glance

What is it? a weighted ball attached to your club.

What will it do? get your wrists moving correctly on the takeaway, synchronize your body with your swing, get your hands to release correctly after impact, and (probably) cure your slice.

Can you hit balls with it: no

Why The GEM is the best training aid for slice this year

It takes a fair bit for a new golf training aid to make our list. We get sent a lot of different devices each year, test them out, and reject most of them as gimmicky.

Which is why, until our most recent update, we had the unusual number of 9 training aids on our list. But now, with the addition of The GEM, we finally have 10.

The GEM is not much to look at, but it really does work. Although only if you use it correctly.

The GEM

I’ll be honest. Over-eager, I pulled it out the box, attached it to my 7 iron with the long rod, and started swinging away. It was wobbling all over the place. I figured I knew what it was supposed to be doing (educating my hands) but I was wrong.

Because it’s not just about your hands, you have to get your body moving correctly (opening up) to keep the weight in-line with the shaft. Otherwise, you get the wobble, which really is instant feedback that you’re not swinging correctly.

When I watched some of the training videos and started using it correctly I immediately had a different feel to my swing and the wobble was gone.

I’m not a slicer (my miss is a hook). But after swinging with The GEM I could feel a different position at the top. The club face felt more open to me, but when I checked on video it was actually square to my swing plane when I was previously shut. So while it’s mainly promoted to slicers due to the assistance with release, I’m pretty sure the backswing element is going to help with my hook.

The GEM is a truly innovative device that will help you feel the correct way to swing (with a full body release), and instant feedback (the wobble) when you’re doing it wrong.

4. SuperSpeed Golf Training System

the best training aid for swing speed

SuperSpeed golf training system

SuperSpeed at a glance

What is it? Three flexible shafts with weights on them (which get progressively heavier).

What will it do? Increase your swing speed through ‘overspeed training’. Basically you train by swinging these things (the first two are lighter, and the third, heavier than your driver) fast and aggressively. Over time your driver will feel lighter, and what ‘feels’ like a slow, controlled swing, will be faster than your old ‘100%’ swing.

Can you hit balls with it? You can try. But we wouldn’t recommend it…

Here’s me mixing up relaxed and aggressive swings with the SuperSpeed. My swing speed radar is measuring around a 30mph difference.

Why we picked SuperSpeed as the best training aid for swing speed

If you want the ultimate training aid for developing swing speed, then it’s worth looking at the SuperSpeed Golf Training System.

When you purchase the system you’ll get 3 weighted clubs + an online video training series.

According to SuperSpeed, most players will pick up at least 5% more swing speed within the first 4-6 weeks of working on the program.

That might not sound like much, but it could easily add 30 yards to your drives. Which is pretty considerable.

SuperSpeed weighted clubs have been used by a ton of tour pros, including Phil Mickelson, Ian Poulter, Bryson De Chambeau, and Matt Kuchar.

5. Impact Bag

best impact trainer

impact bag

What is it? Honestly… it’s like a PVC clothes bag with a target on it. In fact you’ll literally stuff it with towels, so it kind of is a clothes bag.

What’s it for? Smashing your 7 iron off. The bag will stop your club at impact and let you check your position. Look for center-face contact, clubface orientation (open, closed, square), and shaft lean.

Can you hit balls with it? You could throw it at them we guess? Otherwise, no.

impact bag

best impact trainer

Impact Bag

Buy an impact bag here

Why should you buy an impact bag?

It’s not very technical, but it works.

If you’ve ever worked on your impact position, you’ll probably try to freeze your swing on the way down, stopping at the moment of impact.

Thing is: that doesn’t really work.

Because in reality, you’ll have started decelerating about half way down. Which means you’re not really getting a true indication of what your impact position would be in a full swing.

When you use an impact bag, you can just swing as normal and hit into the bag. You’ll get a true impact position. And of course you’re looking for a little bit of shaft lean (with your irons) and a square clubface.

This is definitely a golf training aid you can DIY. An old laundry bag stuffed with clothes will probably do the trick.

But if you don’t fancy making one yourself you can grab one without breaking the bank here.

A word of warning: hitting an impact bag is pretty loud, so if you’re doing it outside make sure you have understanding neighbours!

6. Grip Trainer

the best training aid for correct grip

grip trainer

Grip trainer at a glance

What is it? A small training aid with indentations for correct grip position that slips over the grip of your club.

What will it do? Build up muscle-memory for a technically sound grip.

Can you hit balls with it? Yes, you can use it on the range, but not in competition.

grip trainer

best for grip

Grip Trainer

Buy a grip trainer here

Why should you buy a grip trainer?

There’s definitely an argument to be had about whether grip is a fundamental of golf.

Look at the PGA tour and you’ll see a variety of grips. And there’s an argument to be had that if it’s comfortable, and it works, then it’s fine.

But with that being said, there’s no doubt that grip is one of the first things an instructor will look at when you go for a lesson.

So if you want to build a textbook grip, then a grip trainer is worth considering.

Just slip it over the end of your club and pop your fingers into the slots to groove the correct grip.

I use this one from SKLZ golf.

Note: you can use your grip trainer during casual rounds/practice, which is recommended while you get comfortable. But they are not legal for tournament play.

7. Total Golf Trainer Arm

best training aid for correct wrist positions

The Total Golf Trainer Arm at a glance

trainer arm

What is it? A band that attaches to your trail wrist with a ball on the end.

What will it do? Force your wrist into the correct position at the top of the swing (which will cure a number of faults). Will also help to eliminate excessive wrist movement in your chipping stroke.

Can you hit balls with it? Yes.

Why you should buy a Total Golf Trainer Arm

This is another one of the golf training aids that’s ridiculously simple.

And again, it’s another one you could probably DIY. In fact, I’ve definitely seen similar done with a coat hanger.

But if you don’t fancy raiding your cupboard, then this is a great training aid for training the correct movement of the trail wrist during the golf swing.

Use the Total Golf Trainer in full swings to ensure a flat wrist at the top, or for chipping to eliminate excess wrist movement (which causes inconsistent contact).

You’ll get instant feedback if you’re doing it wrong, as your wrist will bump into the ball.

8. 300 Yard Impact

best training aid for distance

The 300 Yard Impact at a glance

300 yard impact

What is it? A glove and grip with a pre-installed shortened shaft to simulate the feel of holding an actual golf club.

What will it do? Adds distance, forces you into the correct impact position, and cures a host of swing faults. It’s ridiculously simple, yet incredibly effective. All you need is a 300 yard impact and a wall.

Can you hit balls with it? No. You don’t need to.

Here’s Monte explaining how it works.

Why the 300 Yard Impact is the best training aid for distance

I don’t see this golf training aid get much press, but it should.

And that’s because it was developed by former world long drive champion Monte Scheinblum. A guy who most definitely knows his stuff.

According to Monte, the 300 Yard Impact will FORCE you to both:

  • swing correctly
  • get into the perfect impact position

And will eliminate faults including:

  • Over the top
  • Sliding
  • Upper body lunge
  • Coming too far from the inside
  • Flipping

Pretty much any fault you can name.

All you’ll need is the 300 Yard Impact + a wall.

9. Impact Path Hitting Mat

best training aid for club path

The Impact Path Hitting Mat at a glance

impact path hitting mat

What is it? A hitting mat which leaves a mark showing you exactly how your club travelled through the impact zone.

What will it do? Gives you instant, accurate feedback on your club path through impact, allowing you to work on correcting it where necessary.

best training aid for club path

Impact Path Hitting Mat

Buy an Impact Path Putting Mat here

Why should you buy an Impact Path Hitting Mat?

It’s important to know the path of your clubhead through impact. Along with clubface direction, it’s what’s going to determine the direction (and curve) of your shot.

There are a few ways to figure out your club path. You can use a launch monitor (see below). You can video your swing, pausing on the relevant frames.

But there’s a relatively cheap golf training aid that makes figuring out your path super simple.

An impact path hitting mat will leave a mark showing you exactly how your club travelled through the impact zone. Just smooth it out after you’ve checked and you’re ready for your next shot.

As well as path, you’ll also be able to check the low point of your swing.

10. Garmin R10

the best portable launch monitor

garmin r10

If you want to dial in your distances, a portable launch monitor is the best way to keep track of your stats.

The Garmin R10 is compact and lightweight enough to carry around with you, and will give you feedback on most of the important metrics relating to your swing (clubhead speed, ball speed, carry, launch angle, distance etc).

The basic unit (available here) comes in at just under $600, and connects with your smartphone for shot visualization and stat recording.

Or if you have a bit more of a budget, you can also integrate the R10 into a full home golf simulator setup.

Golf Training Aid FAQs

Are golf training aids worth it?

Yes. Golf training aids will give you instant feedback on your swing, and help to build the muscle memory that will improve your swing over time.

How can I practice golf at home?

Many golf training aids don’t require hitting a ball to practice as they are designed to help you hit the correct positions in your swing. Those that do, you’ll often get away with hitting whiffle balls into a net. But if you have the budget, we’d recommend a golf simulator to help get more accurate feedback on ball flight.

What golf training aids do the pros use?

The Orange Whip and SuperSpeed’s Golf Training System are two of the most popular golf training aids used by PGA pros.
